Patios & outdoor dining

Outdoor LED screens for restaurant patios.

Watchable at four in the afternoon, rated for a marine layer, and it does not need a sign permit — because it is not signage.

Outdoor LED screen on a restaurant patio
The problem

Why the usual answer does not work.

Patio television is a seasonal business that stops working at lunchtime. A domestic set under a canopy is not bright enough for direct sun, it is not rated for the damp that comes in off the coast, and the one advertised as outdoor is usually a normal panel in a heavier box.

An outdoor LED screen runs at 7,000 nits or more and carries an IP65 rating on both faces, which means rain and washdown. It is legible in direct afternoon sun, and it is still on the wall in January.

Sizing

How we size it.

Sun first, size second
Brightness is the specification that decides whether a patio screen works at all. Indoor panels run 600 to 700 nits. Ours run 7,000 + outdoors, roughly ten times, because it is competing with the sky rather than a room.
Distance across the patio
Take the furthest table and divide by six for general viewing, or by eight if it is mostly game footage with no fine text. A 6 ft 7 in tall screen covers a patio about 39 ft deep.
No permit, because it is not a sign
A screen facing your own seating area, showing your own content to your own customers, is not signage under LA rules and does not go through planning. The moment it faces the street and advertises, it becomes a sign and a permit applies. That distinction is worth getting right before you buy.

Tell us the depth of the patio and which way it faces. Orientation to the sun changes the answer as much as the size does.

Questions

What people ask us.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor screen on my patio?

Generally not, if it faces your own seating area rather than the public right of way. A screen that faces the street and carries advertising is signage and does require a permit in Los Angeles. If your situation is close to that line, ask us before you order — we handle permitted signage as well and will tell you which side you are on.

How bright does an outdoor LED screen need to be?

For direct sun, 5,000 nits is the practical minimum and more is better. We specify 7,000 nits and above outdoors. For comparison, an indoor LED wall runs 600 to 700 nits and a domestic television around 300 to 500, which is why neither works on a patio in daylight.

Will it survive rain and marine layer?

Yes. The cabinets are rated IP65 front and rear, which covers rain and direct washdown. They are designed to live outside permanently rather than to be brought in.

What size outdoor screen for a restaurant patio?

Divide the distance to your furthest table by six. Most patios take our O-1 at 11'6" x 6'7" or the O-2 at 14'9" x 8'2". Larger beer gardens and drive-thru forecourts take the O-3.
